CAMPUS SECURITY SUPERVISOR

JEWISH COMMUNITY CAMPUS OF OTTAWA 21 Nadolny Sachs Pvt., Ottawa ON

The Jewish Community Campus of Ottawa is located on 12 acres in the west end of Ottawa, and includes capital assets of over $30 million in four separate buildings. The campus is home to a community centre, a long term care home, a private day school, an agency for individuals with developmental disabilities, a pre-school, a day care facility, special educational programs, community agency offices, fitness centre, indoor and outdoor pools, and a kosher restaurant. The campus is a hub for activities and programs for all ages, and it operates at high density year round. The community relies upon the Campus organization to maintain a clean and safe place to visit, study, live and work.

Under the direction of the Jewish Federation of Ottawa and the Jewish Community Campus property board, the Campus Security Supervisor is a seasoned security professional who will be responsible for the supervision of all guards and the implementation of all security policies and procedures while regularly working as a security guard.  Working in collaboration with the Campus team, the goal is to ensure a safe and welcoming environment.

To be successful in this role, the Campus Security Supervisor will be a respected leader who will roll up their sleeves and lead by example.   The Supervisor will build rapport with staff and Campus stakeholders, yet will build and sustain a respect for the authority of the security team.   S/he will be reliable, punctual, efficient, and comfortable making decisions while respecting when to include others in the process. 

Reporting to the VP of Corporate Services, this is a Full Time position.  The working schedule will be determined, but may include daytime, evening, and weekend hours.

Responsibilities:

  • This is a working supervisor position.  You will be expected to actively participate in all daily security roles and responsibilities, such as patrolling, camera monitoring, access control, incident response, investigations, etc.
  • Directly supervise all security staff on campus in all aspects of their jobs including but not limited to job training, daily performances, scheduling, performance appraisals, professional development, hiring, coaching, disciplining and dismissals.
  • Responsible for the planning, supervision, and implementation of all security activities whether daily routine or for special circumstances and events.  This includes in-house and/or external security services and law enforcement agencies. 
  • Working with the security team and our national security partner, review and update security processes for the campus, including training, procedures, drills, and emergency operations
  • In accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, W.S.I.B. and all other relevant regulations, ensure a safe, effective and efficient implementation of all assignments for security guards.
  • Maintain and submit on a timely basis all written records and reports that might be required by management or to conform to any relevant city, provincial, federal or other regulations.
  • Attend relevant meetings to stay informed on campus issues and activities.
  • Stay informed on international, national, and local events that may influence security levels and activities on campus and maintain relationships with local emergency response/law enforcement bodies. This includes developing an understanding of hate crimes and anti-Semitic acts.
  • Familiarize yourself with the Jewish culture to gain an understanding of various traditions and requirements that all must respect on campus. 


Key Qualifications:

  • Must hold a valid Ontario Security license.  A dual license would be an asset.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in security. 
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a supervisory or lead role in security is required.
  • Must have solid knowledge and understanding of the Criminal Code and all various applicable acts and regulations. Police Foundation course diploma is an asset.
  • Must have experience working with cctv and access control technology and software.
  • Up to date training in first aid, CPR, and emergency response procedures is an asset.
  • Must have solid written and verbal communications skills in English. 
  • Ability to plan and implement work efficiently, ability to lead, work and motivate others using positive and tactful communication and management skills are an asset.
  • Ability to deal politely and courteously with the public in general but especially when responding to concerns and questions.
  • Ability to effectively function under stressful and potentially life threatening situations.
  • High level of personal motivation, initiative, and energy.


Knowledge of the Jewish community is an asset.
