Our Community

 

Ottawa’s growing Jewish community of 15,000 strong is more than 100 years old and enjoys a rich heritage.


At its heart is the Jewish Community Campus, which is located in the west end at Broadview and Kerr Avenues. The campus is home to the Jewish Federation of Ottawa, the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation, the Soloway Jewish Community Centre, the InfoCentre, Ottawa Jewish Archives, The Bess and Moe Greenberg Family Hillel Lodge, a long-term senior's care facility, the Ottawa Jewish Community School, Tamir, the beneficiary agency assisting people with developmental disabilities, as well as offices for the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin newspaper, Jewish National Fund, Na’amat Ottawa and State of Israel Bonds.

Jewish Education in Ottawa
The community is home to three preschools, three day schools, two orthodox high schools (one for boys and the other for girls), one traditional co-ed high school, six supplemental schools offering after school and Sunday programming plus several Bar/Bat Mitzvah program options. more

Emerging Generation (EG)
Jewish young adults under 40 are a growing and dynamic group emerging within the community. There are many programs and initiatives, from traditional Shabbat dinners to speed dating, that all provide great networking opportunities. more

 

 

 

Hillel Ottawa
Hillel Ottawa is the centre for Jewish Campus Life for Jewish students from Carleton University, the University of Ottawa and Algonquin College. Hillel provides various social, cultural and religious experiences, and prepares students for leadership on our campuses and beyond.

Social Services
Jewish Family Services of Ottawa (JFS) has more than 65 programs and services for children, youth, adults and seniors. Tamir is dedicated to assisting adults with developmental disabilities providing quality services through 12 programs managed by over 100 staff members.

 

Senior Living
There are many programs dedicated to seniors from fitness classes at the Soloway Jewish Community Centre (SJCC), recreational programs for those over 50+ with  AJA 50 , to the long-term care facility, the Bess and Moe Greenberg Family Hillel Lodge.

 

 

 

Synagogues
Ottawa has numerous synagogues for every level of observance, including: Orthodox, Conservative, reform, Chabad and Reconstructionist. Memberships include weekly and High Holiday services, plus a wide variety of educational programs and social opportunities. see list

Ottawa Vaad Hakashrut (OVH)
The OVH under the direction of Rabbi Levy Teitlbaum, continues to expand the kosher services available to the community. The team of mashgichim work hard to ensure a high standard of excellence is maintained and internationally recognized by other kashrut agencies. For more information visit the OVH website.

Ottawa Jewish Archives
The Archives is dedicated to gathering, recording and preserving the collective memory of the Jewish community in Ottawa and making the historical records accessible to all persons for their use, well-being and enjoyment.

PJ Library

PJ Library is a Jewish family engagement program implemented on a local level throughout North America. We mail free, high-quality Jewish children’s literature and music to subscribers on a monthly basis. We also organize programs and events aimed at encouraging children’s literacy and Jewish community involvement. more
