Andrea Freedman
President and CEO, Jewish Federation of Ottawa and Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation


Throughout her 18-year career, Andrea has worked in the non-profit world, primarily in the Jewish Federation movement.  She spent six years at Federation CJA (Montreal) in a variety of positions, including serving as Director of the Israel and Overseas Department. At the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, among her many duties, Andrea was responsible for major gift fundraising and corporate partnerships, and significantly increasing giving. Working for UIA Federations of Canada, she successfully consulted with communities across the country and provided an extensive demographic study.  

 

Prior to joining the Jewish Federation of Ottawa and Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation as President and CEO in 2013, Andrea served as Vice-President of Philanthropy and Operations at Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation in Toronto overseeing all operations, annual fundraising, legacy giving and events. 


She is the recipient of a BA in political science from McGill University and an MSW from the University of Michigan.

Leslie Kaufman
Vice President, Corporate Services, Jewish Federation of Ottawa (JFO), Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation (OJCF)

   
Originally from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, Leslie moved to Ottawa just over 10 years ago. Prior to her move, she held senior IT positions at Point Park and Carlow Universities in the US.  In Ottawa, she switched focus and quickly rose through the ranks to serve as President & COO of Decision Academic Inc., a software company that provides curriculum management and academic advising solutions to a range of clients.
 
With an MBA and over 25 years of progressively responsible management and leadership experience, Leslie is an established senior manager, an effective communicator, successful team-builder, with strong negotiation and relationship skills. She has a long-history of experience in volunteer and leadership roles with Jewish youth groups, camps, and synagogue life in the US.


The oversight areas for Corporate Services include: Marketing and Communications, Campus Management, Information Technology, Archives, Ottawa Va’ad Ha’kashrut, and governance.

Susan Lee

Chief Financial Officer

 

Susan Lee is a CPA, CGA who earned a Bachelor of Commerce from Carleton University. She has over 18 years of experience working at mainly small to mid-size organizations within a diverse range of industries including health, technology, and non-profit.


Prior to joining the Jewish Federation of Ottawa, she held senior finance positions in not-for-profit and private sector entities, driving and implementing transformational change. Susan is dedicated to assisting staff’s career journey progression through coaching, mentoring and continuous, constructive and relevant feedback.

 

As part of Federation’s management team, Susan is responsible for delivering financial services including strategy, accounting, financial forecasting, budgeting and reporting to multiple entities within Ottawa’s Jewish Community. 

 

Away from work, Susan enjoys hiking, running and painting.

Sarah Beutel
Vice President, Community Building

 

Sarah Beutel received a BA from McGill University and a Masters of Public Administration from Carleton University. Her past experience includes working for Hillel Lodge Long Term Care Foundation and grant writing for various organizations. Sarah has many years of work and volunteer experience with boards and committees of not-for-profit organizations. In 2008, Sarah began working for the Jewish Federation of Ottawa. She also sits on the board of Na’amat Canada.


Sarah is married to Steven Morgan and has four children.

Pauline Colwin
Director of Communications

Pauline joined the Federation in May 2013 and was integral in launching the redesigned Ottawa Jewish Bulletin and online edition. Pauline continues to manage the Bulletin, as well as our social media and websites. She is responsible for the marketing and communication needs of both the Federation and the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation. Prior to the Federation, Pauline was an editor at the Ottawa Citizen. She received an Honours Degree in English Literature from Ottawa University and holds a diploma in Journalism.


Away from work, Pauline enjoys camping with her family, writing and experimenting with mixed media art.

Shari Cooper
Human Resources Manager


Shari Cooper is a Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from York University, coupled with a diploma in Human Resources from Sheridan College, and more than 20 years of human resources management experience across multiple industries ranging from small not-for-profit and owner/operator to large multinational organizations. 
 

In her role as Human Resources Manager, Shari is accountable for development, delivery and oversight of HR programs and services for the Bess and Moe Greenberg Family Hillel Lodge and the Jewish Federation of Ottawa. She provides expert advice in all areas of HR to support these two organizations and ensures their respective strategic missions and business objectives are met through best practice in line with current legislation.
 
Shari relocated with her family from the Greater Toronto Area to Ottawa in 2018, and is currently enjoying the rich culture, sense of community and welcome change of pace that our beautiful National Capital region has to offer.

Micah Garten
Director of Development


Over the last 8 years, Micah has done fundraising for a number of charities here in Ottawa, most recently as the Manager of Philanthropic Relationships for the Shepherds of Good Hope. He has a degree in Fundraising Management from Ryerson University and is currently working on completing his MBA. He is married to Jessica and has one young child.


Micah’s role is to connect with donors and help ensure their support can make the biggest impact in the lives of the community.

Kara Goodwin
Director of Community Collaboration

Kara possesses over 17 years’ experience in communications and business consulting, including running her own consulting firm. For government and private-sector, she has led projects to improve customer engagement and processes. Prior to moving to Ottawa, Kara worked with the Calgary Jewish Federation as Director of Community Relations and Communications. Her work involved building relationships with diverse stakeholders and advocating for the Jewish community and Israel. She has served on non-profit boards, including that of the Calgary JCC.  

Kara has an MA in English from Concordia and a BA from the University of Guelph. She is married to Daniel and they have three children.

Lindsay Newman
Interim Campaign Manager

Lindsay’s involvement with Federation began as a volunteer on the PJ Library Parent Committee and she especially enjoys working with volunteers to accomplish shared goals. 
 
In her most recent role as the Community Engagement Specialist, Lindsay welcomed newcomers to Ottawa, supported the Shoah Committee and the March of the Living, and helped to launch the popular Microgrants initiative. 
 
With a BA in English from Carleton University, Lindsay acquired experience in not-for-profit arts administration, including grant writing and fundraising, and managed a private psychology practice. 
 
In collaboration with the Development team, Lindsay is passionate about raising funds to support the people and programs that make our community so remarkable.
 
Lindsay is the parent of two daughters who turn cartwheels in the halls of the Soloway JCC and can now read PJ Library books - in Hebrew! When they grow up, they want to work for Federation.
